Understanding Radiology Tests and What to Expect

Imaging tests help your doctor see what is going on inside your body. Here is a quick guide to the most common ones.

X-Ray

Used for bones, chest and dental imaging. Quick, painless, low radiation.

Ultrasound

Uses sound waves. Common for pregnancy, abdomen and soft tissues. No radiation.

CT Scan

Detailed cross-sectional images. Used in emergencies and for complex diagnoses. Low to moderate radiation.

MRI

Detailed images using magnets (no radiation). Often used for brain, spine, joints. Takes longer and is louder than a CT.

How to prepare

- Bring your referral and any prior imaging

- Tell the team if you are pregnant or have metal implants

- Follow any fasting instructions

Talk to your doctor if you are unsure whether a test is needed.
